Why buy originals?

Originals are unique, one-of-a-kind works created personally by the artist. As such, the original is inherently more valuable over time than a reproduction.

Originals may be created in a series, usually by hand printing techniques including etchings, monoprints, monotypes, stone lithographs, hand done serigraph screen prints,  and collagraphs. These series originals are unique because although a series may share subject and general composition, each piece is unique because of infinite possible variations created by the hand of the artist. Series originals may be more affordable because the artist can work more efficiently this way.

Originals look better and last longer than reproductions. The pigments and other materials used are archival quality and stable.  When combined with archival framing materials (the ONLY way we frame at Estrella Fine Art), originals retain their beauty for decades or longer than mass produced prints can.

A word about Manufactured Art a.k.a. "Starving Artist" paintings. Manufactured paintings are handmade by artists in China and other countries where labor and materials are very cheap.  These artists copy the work of others, often by using a projector to place an image onto a canvas mounted on a wall.  They then fill in the image.  In some cases, these art factories use an assembly line process where someone paints skies, the  another person paints trees, etc.  The result is manufactured, decorative art, NOT original fine art.  These works are created without regard to copyright, which is illegal.

You can probably tell from this that I deplore the proliferation of this cheap manufactured art.  However, I recognize it does meet a market need and it offers a decorative solution.  Because these are actual paintings and very often the artists that make then have very good skills, the finished product can look good and serves its purpose.

Please know this if you must buy this work:

First, even though it may cost hundreds  of dollars, a manufactured painting has no more value as art than a lamp or a couch.

Secondly, this industry has harmed American artists by impairing their ability to sell their work for fair prices.  This industry harms the foreign artists doing the job of painting these copies because they receive very little for their work and their skill and talent as artists cannot be realized this way.

Third, there are other more honorable ways to achieve the same decorative results. For example, if you absolutely MUST have a Van Gogh or a Renoir, consider having an American art student make the painting for you.  Contact an art school or your local art league to see whether anyone would be interested in a commission.
